Corn tortilla

Home made tortillas are easy to make, versatile and tasty. All you need is a tortilla press. You can roll them out by hand, but they are fragile in their raw state and a tortilla press just makes your life easier.

Ingredients

  • 230g masa harina
  • 355ml hot water
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of oil (we use rapeseed oil)

Method

Start with the flour in a bowl and mix in the salt
Add the oil to the water and pour over the flour
Start by combining with a spoon
As soon as the mixture is cool enough to handle, get your hands in and bring the mixture together and knead for a couple of minutes
Leave to rest for at last 20 minutes
Remove small amounts of the mixture (golf ball sized), roll into a ball and press gently between your hands
Place in the tortilla press (lined with grease proof paper to avoid the tortillas from sticking)
Cook in a hot dry pan for 30 seconds to 1 minute per size

For flavoured tortillas, you can add a tablespoon beetroot powder for a red colour or spirulina for a green colour (just take a spoonful of flour out)
